Wow, what is going on in Iceland the past 48 hours! There have been 3
concentrated areas of earthquake swarms that are still apparently
ongoing.
Iceland is a land of high volcanic activity, probably only second to
the Indonesian regions. Iceland is located directly over tectonic plate
boundaries and is rumbling with activity, possibly magma movement
beneath the surface.
The earthquake swarm location at the southeast of Iceland is located
near the Krisuvik volcano. The swarming is highly active at this moment
and is mostly concentrated at a ridge location about 2.5 km to the
east.

Another earthquake swarm is suddenly occurring near Arnarvatnsheidi,
located in west – central Iceland, a location of flat highlands riddled
with lakes.

Yet another earthquake swarm has rumbled in the region near the Askja
volcano, located in east – central Iceland, directly over a tectonic
plate boundary.

I don’t recall this much sudden earthquake swarming in Iceland for some time. It certainly is getting interesting.
Update, 7-Dec-2010, most of the recent activity now appears to be on the Reykjanes peninsula, at the Krisuvik volcano.

Another volcano in Iceland, Esjufjoll, is shaking the ground with probable magma movement beneath its 40 square mile caldera.
Dozens of earthquakes have rattled during the past 12 hours at
Esjufjoll, between 1 and 3 km beneath the massive Vatnajokull ice sheet,
the largest glacier in Europe, located at the southeast of Iceland.
The Vatnajokull glacier shares its ice with seven volcanoes, all
associated with a ripping tear in the Earth’s crust where the Mid
Atlantic Ridge forms a tectonic boundary.
Esjufjoll is most famous for causing a massive flood during 1927. Its
last activity occurred during October 2002 when earthquake swarms
indicated magma movement. Now, 8 years later during the same month, once
again Esjufjoll is awakened.
Update: 28-Oct-2010, Just as fast as the swarm appeared, it has gone quiet. Perhaps building more pressure.
Update: 14-Nov-2010,
After several weeks of quiet, Esjufjoll is quaking again, this time a
mini swarm, some within minutes of each other, including a magnitude 3.1
at depth of 8.5 km.
Indications of magma movement is evident underneath Europe’s largest ice
cap glacier, Vatnajokull, located in southeast Iceland. Seven volcanoes
lie underneath Iceland’s largest glacier, and most of them are active. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge plate boundary passes right underneath the west side of the glacier
separating the North American plate and Eurasian plate, where recent
very active earthquake activity has taken place near the Bardarbunga
volcano and is apparently ongoing at this moment, albeit slightly
subdued from yesterday’s cluster.
More than 30 earthquakes have quickly occurred during Sunday, 27-Sep-2010, many within minutes of each other and most of them at depths ranging from 5 km to 10 km.
Magnitudes of most all the earthquakes have ranged from 1.5 to 3.7.
Tremor measurements from nearby stations clearly recorded the activity
and is viewable at the Icelandic Met office website.

The very active region is located very near the western edge of
Vatnajokull glacier, about 15 km southwest from the Bardarbunga volcano
and 25 km northwest from the Grimsvotn volcano. Interestingly, this
particular earthquake pattern has formed into a broad line. This could
be indicative of a magma channel undergoing bulging stress.

Iceland remains the world’s hot spot for volcanic activity. With the
recent eruption of Eyjafjallajokull during April-2010 having caused
great disruption in European air travel and European economies, all eyes
remain on the Island to the north as we watch for signs of a dangerous
Katla eruption (which has always historically followed Eyjafjallajokull
soon thereafter), and now this new suspicious activity beneath the
mammoth Vatnajokull glacier. The Earth is restless.

The Katla volcano located in Iceland, lies beneath the Myrdalsjokull
glacier and is located next to its little sister volcano,
Eyjafjallajokull, which erupted earlier this year on 14-Apr-2010.
Historically, Katla has always erupted not long after Eyjafjallajokull, the longest span being 1.5 years and the shortest time span being approximately 6 months. As of this post, 5 months have gone by since the clock started ticking so lets have a look at what has happened at Katla during that time.
The image above just shows earthquakes that have occurred at or
within the caldera itself. I have been casually tracking the Katla
volcano since 17-May of this year, so this data tracks the 4 month
period since then. During that time I have identified 58 earthquakes at
the caldera. Also during that time I have identified 307 earthquakes at
Katla including the region outside of the caldera, but still on the
Katla volcano itself.
The following image “should” be an up to date current view of the caldera earthquakes:
I am focusing on the caldera because apparently many of the other
earthquakes, particularly those just outside the western rim of the
caldera, are being caused by seasonal glacial water runoff stresses and
are not themselves indicators of potential magma movement. There are a
few technical papers written on that subject, and the explanation made
sense having read them.
The caldera has an area of about 42 square miles (108 square kilometers) and is about 6 x 9 miles across (10 x 15 km).
I am attributing the earthquakes that are shown here on the west
caldera rim as being associated with the seasonal glacial water stress
factors, because when looking at the larger map, you can see that the
earthquakes continue on to the west as described in the technical
papers.
That leaves three areas of interest: the northeast rim, the southeast region, and central-northeast region.
The location of the 1918 eruption is in the southeast region while the
location of the 1715 eruption is in the central-northeast region. I
don’t have the data or the tools to show depth and 3-dimensional
renderings of the earthquakes (I am not a vulcanologist, but an
interested observer of geophysical events), but I’m sure that would be
telling in some way.
The conclusion is that Katla has not yet concluded this portion of
its history. The frequency of earthquake occurrence has been fairly
constant with a few fits of exciting higher amounts once in a while. One of the real clues will be when the number of earthquakes begin to rise significantly, as what typically happens prior to any eruption.
There is nothing we can do to stop its present course, all we can do
is stay aware of the natural dangers such as this one (a Katla eruption
could be possibly up to 10 times that of Eyjafjallajokull). It never
hurts to examine your survival preparedness plans, particular tailored
to the risks that around your own geographical location. Obviously for
those living in Iceland, the dangers are great, although that is a part
of their everyday life. For those in northern and western Europe, Katla
will likely cause much worse air travel problems than those recently
experienced following Eyjafjallajokull, and there may be breathing
problems associated with Katla’s heavy asshfall – depending on wind
direction at the time. For the rest of the world, the impact will be
economic due to Europe being directly affected, and there could possibly
be some partial blockage of the sun from stratospheric ash. We will
see.
Each time following an eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull
volcano, it’s mighty neighbor, Katla, has erupted shortly afterward.
Eyjafjallajokull and Katla are separated by 27 km (17 mi) and are
thought to have interconnecting magma channels. Eyjafjallajokull erupted on April 14, 2010.
Katla (named after an Icelandic witch) is known to have erupted 16
times since 930, the last time during 1918. Since then, Katla has been
quiet for the longest duration on record. It is overdue, and now that it’s little sister Eyjafjallajokull has erupted, it’s just a matter of time.
Katla itself is 30 km (19 mi) in diameter reaching a height of 1,500
meters (4,900 feet), while the 10 km (6 mi) crater of the volcano lies
up to 500 meters (1,600 feet) beneath the Myrdalsjokull glacier on the
southern edge of Iceland. Iceland sits directly on top of a split in the
earth’s crust of two tectonic plates on the Mid-Atlantic ridge and is a
hot spot for volcanic activity with 35 volcanoes around the island.
An eruption of Katla would likely be 10 times stronger
than the recent eruption of Eyjafjallajokull and could be disastrous to
Iceland with raging floods from the melting Myrdalsjokull glacier,
immense depths of volcanic ash, and climate change to regions of the
world.
If the eruption is long enough and high enough, ash could be blasted
20 km (12 mi) into the stratosphere and circle the globe blotting out
part of the sun from penetrating to earth, and reduce temperatures
worldwide. The big question of course is how big would the eruption be
and to what extent the global climate change.
We know that when Katla erupted in 1700, the Mississippi River froze
just north of New Orleans for example. When Mount Pinatubo erupted in
1991 for 2 days, it dropped temperatures 4 degrees worldwide for a year.
Katla on average erupts for 50 days, although the cumulative severity
over that time period depends on the force of the eruptions lifting ash
high into the atmosphere. We won’t know until it happens.
Although the magnitude of disaster would not be that of a super
volcano such as Wyoming’s Yellowstone, the potential is there for a
global catastrophe from a worldwide extended deep freeze. Huge crop
failures would translate to starvation for some and very high food
prices for others. A ripple effect would occur through the already
teetering economies of the world.
Since the potential exists for a major Katla eruption, we should
prepare ourselves as best we can, knowing that modern society would be
disrupted from a disaster of this magnitude (just look at what happened
to worldwide air travel and the economic impact from the small eruption
of Eyjafjallajokull).
A first and best course of preparedness action is to begin with the
survival basics, storing extra food and water. Food storage is a
financially sound thing to do as food prices will not be going down in
the future. Buy and store extra food that you would normally eat, and
implement inventory rotation. Even if disaster does not strike, you will
consume the extra food anyway while benefiting from peace of mind.

Isaiah 56:
[7] Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them
joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall
be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house
of prayer for all people.
Philippians 2:
[1] If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of
love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, [2] Fulfill
ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of
one mind. [3] Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in
lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. [4] Look
not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. [5]
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: [6] Who, being
in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But
made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was
made in the likeness of men: [8] And being found in fashion as a man, he
humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. [9]
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above
every name: [10] That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; [11]
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father.

Lightning
Fire: Then the LORD caused it to rain upon Sodom
and upon Gomorrah an inflammable sulfurous brimstone and a burning, hot
flaming fire from the LORD Jehovah out of the sky of heaven; And he looked
toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld,
and, lo, a cloud of ashes, smoke and vapor of the land went up as the fume
and smoke of a smelting furnace.---
Thou shall be visited
by the Lord Jehovah of Hosts with a peal of thunder, with earthquake and
vibration, with fierceness, shaking and vapor; and great noise, with whirlwind, storm and tempest and the flash of bright, flaming, devouring, burning
fire.---
and I will rain upon him and upon his army and
crowd of troops, upon many people as a collective unit, that are with him, an
over flowing gush, and conquering overflowing rain, and a great weight of a
peal of hail stones, of a hot, burning, fiery, flaming fire and an inflammable,
sulfur resin of brimstone.---
And I will show a token, a
sign and wonders in the air of the heavens, in the visible arch of the sky,
where the clouds move; and in the field, in the ground, in the wilderness and
throughout all the land of the earth; it will have the appearance of blood
along with a burning, hot, flaming fire; and columns and pillars of clouds, of
angry dust, smoke and vapor.---
For,
behold, the day shall come, it will burn as a furnace, a fire pot and an
oven; and all the arrogant and proud, yes all that do wickedly, will be as
stubble: and the day that comes, shall burn and set them ablaze with a flaming fire,
saith the Lord Jehovah of Hosts, that it shall leave them neither root or
branch.---
and there will be great signs of terror and
fearful sights from heaven.---
But, moreover, the same day that
the patriarch Lot went out of Sodom, it rained a lightning fiery fire and a
sulfurous hellish brimstone, from the sky of heaven and destroyed, and caused
them all to perish. Even like and even thus, in the same way and manner,
shall it be, in the day when the Son of Man is disclosed and revealed.---
And I will bring forth a rare event, so extraordinary, it will inspire wonder; for
it will be in the elevated area of the sky, in heaven above and a token and
sign of these events will be throughout the entire regions under the surface of
the soil, of all the land of the world, in the earth beneath; for it will be a
visible wonder of flowing substance like blood and of flashes of lightening and
fire, with a mist of vapor of smoke: The rising of the sun in the east and
the rays of light, will become as an outlining shadow and shall be turned into
darkness, and the bright shining moon, will appear to be a blood red color;
before that great, mighty and notable, visible day of the Lord, the One in
Supreme Authority will come:---
And the sky of heaven rent
apart, departed and separated as a writing scroll when it is rolled
together;---
And he opened up the holes in the ground, the
cisterns and wells of the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the
bottomless pit, from the depthless infernal, from the holes in the ground, in
the manner as the smoke of a great burning, smoking furnace; and the sunlight
as rising in the east and the blowing air from its’ original place was darkened
from the smoke of the holes in the ground, the cisterns, the wells, the abyss
and the pit.---
And thus, I saw the horses in the
inspired appearance of the vision, and them that sat on them, having a chest
and breastplate of flaming red fire; and of jacinth, deep blue; and a yellow
sulfurous-like brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of
lions; and out of their mouths proceeded a lightning fire and smoke and a
sulfurous brimstone. By these three was the stroke, calamity and
plague that caused the third part of human beings to be outright killed and
slain to death, by the lightning fire; and by the smoke, and by the
yellow sulfurous like-brimstone, which proceeded out of their mouths.---
and there were bright, glaring, shining lightning; and a
tone of sounds, noises, voices and thundering; and an earthquake, a shaking, a
commotion and tempest; and exceedingly great, large, mighty hail.---
And there were voices and noises, sounds of a tone; and roaring thunders, and
a bright, shining glare, lightning’s; and there was an exceeding great,
large and mighty earthquake and earth-shock; a shaking of the ground, a
commotion and tempest; such as this, so vast of a magnitude; such as was not
since human beings were upon the earth; so mighty an earthquake, and so
exceedingly great, large and mighty, so full of power.---
and there descended and fell upon human beings, a great, large and mighty
hail out of the sky of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent-like:
and human beings blasphemed, defamed and spoke evil of the very exceeding God;
Deity, because of the plague, stroke and calamity of the hail; for the
plague, stroke and calamity thereof was exceeding and vehemently, in high
degree, very great; for it was extremely severe and terrible.
